
Stop Your Recessed Heaters From Shorting Out
If you’ve ever installed a recessed infrared ceiling heater, you know they live in a pretty brutal environment. You’re basically stuffing a heat source into a tight ceiling cavity. That heat doesn’t just go down into the room; it builds up right around the electrical connections. If the lead-wire sealing isn’t done right, the insulation basically bakes. It cracks. And then? It shorts out.
What’s actually happening to the wires?
A lot of basic setups rely on cheap glue or loose rubber grommets. That’s a recipe for disaster. In high-wattage units, the spot where the wire enters the housing gets incredibly hot. I’ve seen it happen a dozen times: the insulation goes through “brittle-failure.” That’s a fancy way of saying the wire jacket literally turns into powder. Once that happens, you’ve got a live wire touching a grounded metal chassis. Not a great situation.
Why we obsess over the seals
We do things a bit differently to stop that from happening. Instead of just slapping some glue on it, we use high-temp silicone potting or ceramic ferrules. It creates a gas-tight seal. The goal is simple: keep the hot air from crawling back into the wiring. We make sure these seals can handle 200°C without shrinking. Because if a seal shrinks, you get a gap. And a gap is just an open door for moisture and heat to get in and eat away at your copper leads.
The trade-off you need to know
Here’s the catch. Professional sealing turns the unit into a closed system. It’s way safer and it’ll last years longer, but it means you can’t just “wing it” during installation. You have to get the wiring right the first time. If you cut the leads too short, you can’t just crack open the sealed junction to fix it without ruining the thermal barrier. One last tip: make sure your contractor uses cabling rated for high temperatures for the final hookup. If they use standard PVC wire, the heat leaking from the housing will melt your house wiring long before the heater even thinks about failing.
