
Why Your Infrared Heaters Keep Dying (And How We Fixed It)
If you’ve ever run a chicken coop, you know it’s a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick humidity, the ammonia fumes, and the constant swing from freezing to roasting, it’s basically a torture chamber for a heater. Most of the cheap heaters you find online fail in the exact same spot: where the lead-wire enters the unit. Moisture sneaks in, fries the insulation, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit.
The problem with “standard” seals
Here’s the thing about heat: everything moves. When your heater kicks on, those lead-wires expand. When it cools down, they shrink. Most sealants just can’t keep up with that. If the stuff is too stiff, it cracks like an old sidewalk. Too soft? It just melts away. We do things differently. We use high-temperature silicone and specialized resins to bond the wire to the housing. It’s a multi-step process, but it means the seal actually holds while the element is screaming hot. It stops “wicking,” which is just a fancy way of saying it keeps water from hitching a ride along the wire straight into your heating coil.
Real craftsmanship vs. the cheap stuff
A lot of mass-market brands just put a drop of glue or a plastic sleeve over the connection and call it a day. That doesn’t cut it. We obsess over the transition zone—that tiny gap between the wire and the element. By using a precision-molded seal, we get rid of the air gaps. No air means no oxidation, and no oxidation means your connections actually last. You get a heater that survives more than one season. Just a heads-up, though: we can seal the leads, but we can’t fix your power grid. If your voltage spikes wildly, the filament is still going to snap. That’s just physics.
A quick tip for setup
When you’re wiring these in, please—do yourself a favor and use a drip loop. Even with our seals, you don’t want water pooling directly on the connector. It takes two seconds to do right, and it means you spend way less time swapping out burnt-out units and more time actually taking care of your birds.
