
Keeping Your Pergola Heaters Dry (And Alive)
Putting an infrared heater in a pergola sounds simple until you remember that the outdoors is, well, outdoors. You’ve got humidity, random mist, and the occasional rainstorm. Here’s the problem: if a stray drop of water hits a glowing hot quartz tube, or seeps into the wiring, things go south fast. You’re looking at a short circuit or, worse, the glass cracking instantly from the temperature shock. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that from happening. Fighting the Mist We don’t just throw a cover on the heater and call it a day. We use a sealed housing to keep the guts of the machine dry. The real trick is the seal between the chassis and the reflector. If that gap isn’t tight, rainwater basically “climbs” into your wiring through capillary action. To stop this, we use silicone gaskets. They don’t warp or crumble even after years of heating up and cooling down. It just works. The “Cold Drop” Problem Quartz tubes are finicky. Imagine a tube sitting at 600°C. One cold drop of water hits it, and snap—it’s fractured. To prevent this, we angled the reflectors and added shielding so water just slides right off. We also vented the housing to let the unit breathe, but we positioned those vents carefully. That way, the wind can’t push rain directly into the electrical connections. The Balancing Act Now, you can’t just wrap a heater in plastic and call it waterproof. If you seal a unit too tightly, the heat gets trapped inside. If you run your heater at full blast for ten hours straight in a totally airtight box, you’ll eventually fry the internal wires. It’s a trade-off. You have to balance that water protection with the right mounting height so the unit can breathe. We build these things to take a beating. By shielding the tubes and isolating the terminals, we turn a product that might only last a couple of seasons into something that stays warm for years.
