
Stop the Shards: Keeping Your Wafers Clean During IR Curing
If you’ve ever dealt with a lamp burst in the middle of wafer fab, you know it’s a nightmare. It isn’t just about the machine stopping. It’s the chaos that follows. When a quartz tube pops under a heavy load, you’re not just dealing with a broken bulb. You’ve got glass shards and metallic bits raining down on your silicon. One bad second and you’re scrapping entire batches. It’s expensive, it’s frustrating, and it’s completely avoidable. Why tubes actually break Most of the time, it comes down to thermal shock or those annoying little hotspots. To fight this, we use high-purity fused quartz. It doesn’t expand or contract nearly as much as the cheap stuff, so it can handle rapid heating and cooling without developing those tiny micro-cracks that eventually lead to a blow-out. But we don’t just rely on the glass. We add a “shatter-shield”—a protective sleeve that acts as a backup. If the inner filament gives up, the shield catches the debris. Your wafers stay clean, and your day stays stress-free. Dealing with the heat High-wattage lamps are great for fast curing, but they put a ton of pressure on the seals. We use reinforced end-caps and electrodes that fit just right to keep gas from leaking out. Here’s a tip: if you’re pushing your lamps to the limit, double-check your cooling manifold. If your airflow is off, heat builds up right at the ends of the lamp. That’s usually where the snap happens. Getting them installed We keep the connectors standardized so they snap in tight. You don’t want loose connections—that’s how you get electrical arcs that char the tube ends. When you’re wiring the rack, just make sure the tension is even across the board. Now, there is a small trade-off. Because of that protective shielding, you lose a tiny bit of raw IR power compared to a bare tube. You might need to add a few seconds to your soak time to make up for it. Honestly? It’s a fair trade. A few extra seconds of curing is nothing compared to the disaster of a contaminated cleanroom.
