
Keeping Wafers Warm: Why We Switched to IR for our Cleanroom Trolleys
If you’ve ever worked in a semiconductor fab, you know the struggle. Moving wafers or components from one spot to another feels like a constant fight to keep them from cooling down. It’s a headache. To fix this, we started putting short-wave infrared (IR) heating lamps right into the transport trolleys. Here is the trick: most heaters just warm up the air around the part. IR is different. It shoots energy straight into the target. It’s a simple shift in how the physics work, but it makes a massive difference in how much power we burn. Cutting the waste Standard resistive heaters are basically space heaters. They waste a ton of energy heating the entire room just to get one part warm. We don’t want that. By using IR, we only heat the load. It’s targeted. That means your kilowatt-hour (kWh) numbers per cycle actually start to drop. Plus, these lamps ramp up fast. You aren’t sitting around for an hour waiting for the heater to hit the right temperature. It takes the pressure off the factory grid. But a word of warning: because they hit so hard, you have to be careful with your PID controllers. If you overshoot the mark, you’re looking at thermal shock, and nobody wants that. Keeping things clean In a fab, a single speck of dust is a disaster. We use quartz-glass envelopes for the lamps because they don’t off-gas or shed particles. To make sure we aren’t wasting heat, we wrap them in stainless steel reflectors. It pushes every single photon toward the load instead of letting it bleed out into the cleanroom. On the electrical side, we use heavy-duty connectors. These trolleys move. A lot. You can’t have a loose wire causing a flicker or burning out a filament halfway through a shift. The “Green” side of things We talk a lot about “Green Factories,” but this is where it actually happens. When the system only draws power when the target actually needs heat, the carbon footprint shrinks. It’s a straightforward way to make the transport phase of manufacturing a lot cleaner. It just makes sense.
